On Saturday, April 15, 2017, a 9-Ball tournament dubbed Saturday Shootout, was held in the pool room at the Independence Center of Sun City Anthem. The game is all about who makes the 9-Ball first to determine the winner. It is a fun, fast-paced game that although played in rotation beginning with pocketing the one ball, can end at any time if a player hits the object ball first and it or the cue ball caroms to pocket the nine in any pocket, the game is finished. The person pocketing the nine is the winner.
There was a field consisting of 11 players, ten men and one woman. Alma Bielawa stood out as the lone woman competing against ten high rated club members. At the end it was Alma who won the title.
Viewing the matches was quite enjoyable as Alma quietly, yet confidently defeated everyone she faced and smiled throughout. It was clear the she was having a terrific time and looked to each match with positive anticipation. Victory was the byproduct of a good time.
Impressive as this performance was, there were questions:
What got you interested in pool?
What brought you to Anthem?
Do you enjoy competition?
Alma responded, “My Dad showed me how to play when I was a teenager. No other family member really took the interest that I did.”
“My husband Tony and I moved here on October 20, 2012, soon after Tony had retired. I had belonged to a league in Oceanside, California and signed up to play at anthem as soon as we became residents. I’ve met some really nice people and felt very comfortable from the beginning. I never felt intimidated. “
“Winning the 9-ball was very exciting, being the only woman against the men, they are really great players. I always want to improve and do my best. I would like to see more women get involved. Everyone is helpful and encouraging.” “Last year our team went to the Rio Casino to play in the pool tourney there and we took 2nd place in the Nationals. Going undefeated in 6 matches gave me the confidence that I could compete with the best. The experience at the Rio was unbelievable and the support we received from Sun City was amazing. I hope we can go there again.”
“I try to always do my best. Whenever there is a tournament I will join, I may not win, but you never know unless you try.”
